# Free Developer Edition license

Developer Edition is the full product - every feature Enterprise has, unlocked. It is free, self-hosted, and the license validates offline at boot. AGLedger never calls home to check it.

Registering clears the unlicensed-install warning and gives you a key tied to your name.

## What Developer Edition covers

Developer Edition runs against the PostgreSQL that ships **bundled** with the AGLedger Compose and Helm deployments. Every capability is available: notarization, gating, federation, notifications, the full chain. Production use is permitted.

Pointing AGLedger at an **external or managed database** - Aurora, RDS, Cloud SQL, or a self-managed Postgres server - requires a paid Enterprise license. Developer Edition is licensed for the bundled PostgreSQL only; running it against an external database is outside the free grant. The engine logs a periodic warning when a Developer Edition key connects to an external database. Enterprise is where the external-database license, support, and source access begin.
